The Literacy & Learning Center hosted a memorial event on Saturday, June 24, to celebrate the life of Kay Smith, a dedicated and long-term volunteer at the organization.
The memorial ceremony was held at TL&LC to dedicate the Kay Smith Tutoring Room and commemorate her with an outdoor bench and tree. In honor of Kay, the Pine Tree Garden Club of Atlanta, where Kay became a member in 1973 and served as President and Vice President, made a generous donation to TL&LC for the memorial bench. During her years in Highlands, Kay volunteered as a tutor at TL&LC and also served on the board for five years.
Smith's friend and TL&LC board member Lisa Richards shared some memories of Smith during the event. Richards said, "Friendship with Kay was something to be treasured. She was a true 'forever friend' who lived a well-loved life.” A friend and First Presbyterian Church of Highlands Pastor Emily Wilmarth also reflected on Kay as one who let her light shine before others, a guidepost for all.
We are grateful to Highlands Lawn & Garden for their generous donation of the maple tree.
Donations can be made to The Literacy & Learning Center or the Pine Tree Garden Club of Atlanta in Kay Smith's name. We greatly appreciate your support.
