Bridging Generations: TL&LC After-School Program Connects Students and Seniors

maconncliteracy

The Literacy & Learning Center’s After-school program launched a heartwarming new initiative on Friday, February 21, connecting students with residents of the Eckerd Living Center for a series of monthly intergenerational activity days. The inaugural event saw students from Highlands School bussed to the Eckerd Living Center, where they shared an afternoon of laughter, stories, and creativity with the residents.

The focus of the first visit was a collaborative craft project: creating colorful felt flowers, and group members had their choice of card games and puzzles for the remainder of the time. Students and residents worked side-by-side, talking and helping each other with the steps of the craft. The room was filled with joy as the generations interacted, each age group sharing something unique. The students brought youthful energy and enthusiasm, while the residents shared their wisdom and life experiences. The felt flowers served as a tangible reminder left with the residents of the connections forged during the afternoon.

This initial visit began a valuable partnership between TL&LC and the Eckerd Living Center, offering students a unique opportunity to learn about community engagement and develop a sense of empathy and understanding towards senior citizens. For the residents, the visits provide a chance to connect with younger generations, share their stories, and experience the joy of interacting with children.

TL&LC recognizes the importance of these intergenerational connections and is excited to continue this program every month. Each month, the first 15 students whose parents register them will have the opportunity to participate in the experience with the residents at the Eckerd Living Center. Parents are encouraged to sign their children up early, as space is limited. Pick-up will be at the Eckerd Living Center between 4:30 and 4:45 PM. This program benefits the students and residents and strengthens the bonds within the Highlands community as a whole.
