Shelby Van Pelt’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, was published by Ecco/HarperCollins (US) and Bloomsbury (UK) in Spring 2022. For fans of A Man Called Ove, this luminous debut novel about a widow’s unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus reluctantly residing at the local aquarium—and the truths she finally uncovers about her son’s disappearance 30 years ago.

Swingin' Medallions Headline TL&LC Spring Fundraiser
Gather up your dancing shoes and practice your Carolina Shag — the Swingin' Medallions are coming to town for The Literacy & Learning Center's spring fundraiser! Mark your calendars for an evening of toe-tapping tunes and a generous community spirit on Sunday, June 2nd, at The Farm at Old Edwards.

For over 60 years, The Singin' Medallions have captivated audiences across generations with their timeless horn-driven American beach-style music and infectious energy. Founded in 1962, the group's signature high-octane performances continue to delight fans of all ages. Their most iconic song, "Double Shot of My Baby's Love," released in 1966, remains a classic, having sold over 1.5 million copies.

Highlands Rotary Club has selected The Literacy & Learning Center as the beneficiary for the February bingo night for 2024!

Game cards can be purchased for $15, covering all 15 games being held during the evening.
Join in the fun with family and friends as you play for a chance to win cash prizes! In compliance with NC law, 50% of the funds raised in each game go to the winners, so don’t miss this opportunity to mingle, play, and pocket some spending money all the while as you contribute to a local non-profit. Working to enrich lives and expand the knowledge of children, adults, and families through diverse educational programs that advance literacy in its many forms and to promote lifelong learning, TL&LC helps grow an informed and empowered community.
Beyond the fun of participating, there is also the opportunity to support TL&LC by becoming a table sponsor. For only $100, your generosity will be displayed through table sponsorship signs and related marketing campaigns. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Highlands, this undulating course begins at Kelsey Hutchinson Founders Park, and is friendly to all levels. Early packet pickup will be on Friday the 18th from 4 - 5:30 pm.

Golf Ball Drop by The Literacy & Learning Center

The Literacy & Learning Center will be hosting a Golf Ball Drop fundraiser that will take place at Kelsey & Hutchinson Park in Highlands, where one lucky winner, whose ball lands closest to the target will receive $5,000! Festivities will begin at the park with live music, drinks, food, and fun games that the whole family can enjoy! At the end of the evening, the golf balls will be dropped from a Highlands Fire Department truck ladder, and the ball closest to the target will win the grand prize!
Balls are available for purchase at $10 each and there is no limit to the number of balls one individual can purchase in order to increase their odds. Additionally, you do not have to be present to win. A live stream will be available for you to watch the drop from home!
Through fundraisers like this, grants, and donations from the community, The Literacy & Learning Center is able to provide free educational programs to individuals of all ages. The mission of The Literacy & Learning Center is to enrich lives and expand the knowledge of children, adults, and families through diverse educational programs that advance literacy in its many forms and promote lifelong learning, which results in an informed and empowered community.

Highlands Performing Arts Center!

Randall Atcheson is the epitome of a musical Renaissance man. His gift of communicating the beauty of music in various forms has led to a decidedly versatile career as a much-sought-after artist in the classics as well as in pop and the sacred repertoire. Atcheson is the only person in the history of the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York City to receive simultaneous degrees in both piano and organ. He is a Steinway Artist, has recorded sixteen albums, performed on five continents, played for three Presidents, and has performed fourteen solo concerts at Carnegie Hall. He is an avid runner, has run the New York Marathon, and ran almost 5,00 miles last year. With an extraordinary gift that he openly credits to his Creator, he raises well-crafted music to the level of greatness and he takes masterpieces and makes them unforgettable
